How to Support Someone Having a Panic Attack

Panic attacks can be intense for the person experiencing them and those around them. But your calm presence can make all the difference. Here’s what to do:

Stay present and calm. Speak softly. Avoid saying, “Just calm down”, it’s not helpful.

Guide their breathing. Help them take slow, deep breaths. Try counting together: “Breathe in for four, hold for four, breathe out for four.”

Use grounding techniques. Please encourage them to focus on their senses. “What can you see? Hear? Feel?” This can bring them back to the present.

Validate their feelings. Say things like, “I know this feels scary, but you’re safe. I’m here with you.”

Stay until it passes. Don’t leave them alone unless they ask. A panic attack typically subsides within 20-30 minutes.
